and his two bastard brothers are going to be the death of me. I’ve soaked them in PB Blaster overnight, sprayed WD40, propane torched them, and hit them with the impact gun. Nothing.
The TA still looks funny off the ground.
Got a non-related delivery though, took some pictures of its contents for LaLD while waiting for the PB to soak.
Does Oppo have any ideas? These 3 bolts are wearing me out.

The only option I can suggest is to get a grinder or file on it and the use a drift or wedge to crack the nut off the bolt.

I just paid the local Gentleman’s Tractor (John Deere) Dealer 2 hours of labor to end up just breaking the seized lower stabilizer links I couldn’t budge with my Big-Ass-Wrench, propane torch and two cans of Blaster. :| do you know what two hours of John Deere Dealership labor costs? I didn’t either until now. Lets just say I’m NEVER having them do any work for me again. Especially since they BROKE THE PARTS.
(They are $80/hr.
As ridiculously expensive as Genuine New Holland parts are for out-of-production tractors I could have actually *ALMOST* bought new parts... ok, only one side...
but still! I found some re-pros from a 3rd party for... wait for it:
$68 for a pair.

I’m really trying to avoid that, as the stud is pressed into the exhaust manifold. If I screw up the stud I’m in serious trouble.

Cut, press studs out of manifold, use nut and bolt to replace. Did that on several exhausts with this issue with no problems. Just make sure you use decent quality bolts and crush washers or something to secure them.

That’ll probably require taking the manifold off, which would be very difficult.

Exactly. This is how you emit more. That’s what you want with emissions, more, right?

I would suggest more heat and a breaker bar. Are you using an extension on your impact gun? I assume it’s a bit of a reach to get to the nut. An extension will rob you of breaking torque.

how long of an extension were you using???...... the longer the extensions, and joints on it, the more of the bolt releasing shock you lose........

Have you looked into a nut splitter tool? You can meter those more without worrying about the stud. Access might be a problem though.

Dremel + cutting wheel + contortion =
can you get a nut splitter in there?

Access is a big issue, I’ve got a 10" extension on the impact gun just to get to it.

Are they stainless steel? If you heat stainless nuts, they get tighter. the trick on those would be to heat the flange of the pipe the stud is threaded into, then quench the nut with cold water. Or CRC Freeze-off if you can find it. Or one of those cans of compressed air for dusting turned upside down. The thermal shock will break up the rust and when you hit the nut with your impact, you’ll either get the nut or the whole stud to come out. either way, you win. And for reassembly, never, EVER, reuse a stainless nut on an exhaust system. unless you like snapping off stainless steel studs and drilling them out.

that is more than likely killing a TON of the initial shock that you need to get the nut loose........... you’re gonna need to turn the compressor and gun up a bit with that much extension(or gun with a bigger internal hammer) ........ just wear good eye protection....... you might be getting into 3 foot breaker bar, ratcheting head, and cheater pipe territory......

Yeah been there, I had bolts that probably were untouched since 1970. At least on 240Zs there is a lot of room, no modern things taking up space. My Mercedes diesel has some tight spots, like getting one of the bolts off my air cleaner bracket, underneath and can’t see it, extension..... you know when you want to just bang some holes in the gas tank and light it....

I helped my dad put a spare on his FAP 16-20, like this one
We used the 3ft or so long lu iron, and a 5ft or so long metal pipe fitted to the end of it, for 8ft or so of leverage. While I was busy jumping on the end of the bar, my dad was smacking the 90 degree corner of the lug iron with a huge sledge hammer. We managed to remove the bolts after a lot of effort....
This information won’t help at all, just thought I’d share a story of stubborn nuts.

I’m told, and this is just an idea, that 1/2 and 1/2 ATF and acetone is even better than PB blaster... Nice ‘bird I want one.

well, its probably not that bad if he is using a 1/2" extension. if its a 3/8" extension, then its probably just twisting it all away.

1/2 - 3/8 adapter -> 10" long 3/8" extension

if you don’t have one, get a 10" 1/2" extension and put the adapter on the end of that. Preferably you’d want to not have the adapter, but if you don’t have a 1/2" socket, it shouldn’t lose too much.

yeah, the 1/2 won’t flex the usable shock like the 3/8 does........

stupid question......... you going to RE-use that set of cats???......... what i mean, is that if you are not going to, then why not just sawzall the pipe off next to the flange......... whole lot more access........ right?
